President Hamid Karzai currently holds a narrow lead over ex-Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah in Afghanistan’s presidential election, credited with just over 10,000 more votes than his rival with 10% of the ballots counted.
According to the Independent Election Commission the incumbent is sitting at 212,927 votes, 40.6% of the total counted, while Abdullah has been credited with 202,889 votes, 38.7% of the vote. A candidate needs a 50% majority to avoid a run-off.
Karzai is likely to receive a boost in Kandahar province where only 2% of the votes have been counted and in Helmand where no votes have been tallied.
There have been numerous claims of fraud made by Abdullah supporters, many alleging irregularities and rigging at polling stations
Both Karzai and Abdullah have called on Afghans to remain peaceful during the voting process, urging citizens to respect the process.
