Iraq and Syria Recall Ambassadors Following Dispute Surrounding Recent Bombings in Baghdad

Shortly after a taped confession linked two Syria-based Iraqi Baathists to a string of deadly bombings in Baghdad the Iraqi government pulled its ambassador in Damascus; just hours after that announcement was made Syria responded by recalling their ambassador in Baghdad.

Iraq has accused Damascus of harboring the militants who carried out Wednesday’s attacks on government buildings in Baghdad which killed nearly 100 people. According to the taped confession of Wissam Ali Kadhim the bombings had been ordered by the Syrian-based Baathist leader Sattam Farhan.

An Iraqi cabinet statement, following the confession, demanded Syria turn over Farhan as well as a second man believed to have assisted in the attack, Mohammed Younis al-Ahmed.

The Syrian government has adamantly denied the accusations made in the confession and released a statement through the foreign ministry declaring, “Syria categorically rejects the statement of the spokesman of the Iraqi government regarding the bloody attacks in Baghdad last Wednesday.”
