While nobody could argue with Roger Federer earning the number one seed on the men’s side of the U.S. Open there has been some head scratching after tournament organizers named Dinara Safina the number one seed on the women’s side.
Federer is the world’s number one and has won the last five U.S. Open titles. The Swiss star has had a remarkable 2009 after winning the French Open to capture a career Grand Slam and then taking the Wimbledon title for his record 16th career Grand Slam singles title, snapping a tie he held with Pete Sampras.
While Federer’s resume backed his seeding Safina’s is not as impressive but, staying with the tournament’s policy, the Russian has been seeded number one due to her world ranking, Safina is yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and one of her three losses in a finals came at the hands of number two seeded Serena Williams.
Serena has won three of the past four Grand Slam singles events and comes into the U.S. Open as the defending champion and a heavy favorite to win her 12th Grand Slam title.
Serena’s sister, Venus Williams, is seeded third with Elena Dementeiva and Jelena Jankovic seeded fourth and fifth.
Federer will be followed by Andy Murray while Rafael Nadal is seeded third, Novak Djokovic fourth and Andy Roddick seeded fifth.
The U.S. Open will begin on August 31 and run through September 13.
