Paris Hilton Tops Most Searched News Subject for Google 2006

Paris Hilton displayed her news worthiness once more by grabbing the top spot in Google’s most searched news subject in 2006.

The fascination with all things Paris piqued the interest of news scourers more than Cancer, Hurricane Katrina, Autism, and the 2006 NFL Draft. It was a banner year for the blonde heiress as she had memorable feuds with Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, established a music career for herself, found a new friend in Britney Spears, picked up a DUI, swore off sex for a year, made a few movie appearances, and kept the clubs open in Vegas and LA.

Orlando Bloom landed at number two on the list. Bloom’s name was all over news searches after his performance in the second installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. Bloom enjoyed the success that his co-star Johnny Depp has garnered in the past. Whether it was Bloom’s break up with Kate Bosworth or his new relationship with Kirsten Dunst people couldn’t stop entering his name in the search box. On a side note Bloom actually played the role of Paris in the 2004 film Troy.

The only other person to make it into the Top 10 was tennis sensation Martina Hingis. After retiring from the sport in 2002 Hingis decided a return was in order and it grabbed international headlines.

For those keeping tabs on how their searches fit in to the list, Google’s Top 10 news searches were:

  1. Paris Hilton
  2. Orlando Bloom
  3. Cancer
  4. Podcasting
  5. Hurricane Katrina
  6. Bankruptcy
  7. Martina Hingis
  8. Autism
  9. 2006 NFL Draft
 10. Celebrity Big Brother 2006
