NHL Scores from Dec. 21; Ilya Kovalchuk, Vincent Lecavalier, Max Afinogenov, and Petr Sykora lead their teams to wins

The Boston Bruins (17-13-2) scored two goals in the first period and that proved to be enough in their 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks (17-17-1). Patrice Bergeron scored in the 4th minute and Glen Murray added a goal in the 13th minute to lead Boston. Marc Savard assisted on both goals. Tim Thomas stopped 39 shots for his second career shutout.
 
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 19th goal of the season and handed out two assists while Slava Kozlov had a goal and an assists in regulation to lift the Atlanta Thrashers (20-10-6) past the Pittsburgh Penguins (15-13-6) 4-3 in a shootout victory. Sidney Crosby forced overtime after scoring his 17th goal of the year with :15 seconds left in regulation. Kozlov and Marian Hossa scored for Atlanta in the shootout. For the second game in a row Kari Lehtonen didn’t allow a goal in the shootout phase.
 
The Montreal Canadiens (21-8-5) scored two power play goals and added a shorthanded goal to skate past the Philadelphia Flyers (8-22-4) 4-2. Guillaume Latendresse scored in the first and Craig Rivet followed with a goal a minute later to give the Canadiens a 2-0 lead. Andrei Markov had two assists for Montreal.
 
The Tampa Bay Lightning (16-17-2) scored three goals in the third period to come from behind and beat the Ottawa Senators (17-18-1) 4-2. Vincent Lecavalier scored a goal on an empty net and had an assist and Martin St. Louis added a goal for Tampa. Paul Ranger had a goal and an assist for the Lightning as well. Dany Heatley scored for Ottawa.
 
Nathan Horton scored the tying goal and Rostislav Olesv had the go-ahead goal as the Florida Panthers (13-18-6) scored three goals in the third period to beat the NY Rangers (18-14-4) 3-2. Olesv added an assist for the Panthers come from behind win. Brad Isbister scored the Rangers first goal with :04 seconds remaining in the first period and Jason Ward gave them a 2-0 lead in the second period.
 
Lee Stempniak scored a goal and an assist and Radek Dvorak had two assists as the St. Louis Blues (9-19-6) beat the Los Angeles Kings (12-19-5) 5-2. The win marked the first time this season that the Blues won back-to-back games. The Blues jumped to a 3-0 lead before Anze Kopitar and Derek Armstrong cut the lead to 3-2.
 
Maxim Afinogenov scored a pair of goals in the second period and Toni Lydman had a goal and an assist as the Buffalo Sabres (25-7-2) routed the Nashville Predators (23-9-3) 7-2. The Sabres held a 5-1 lead heading into the third period. Ales Kotalik scored :33 seconds into the first period to begin the blowout. Martin Erat scored a shorthanded goal for the Predators.
 
Petr Sykora scored with just over a minute remaining in regulation to give the Edmonton Oilers (18-14-2) a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes (12-20-1). Ales Hemsky had a goal and an assist for Edmonton. Jarret Stoll scored a shorthanded goal with 11 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Oilers an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Dallas Stars (22-13-0) scored a goal in each period and beat the San Jose Sharks (24-11-0) 3-0. Jeff Halpern put the Stars on the board with a first period goal, Jussi Jokinen scored in the second and Brenden Morrow added a goal in the third for the win. Marty Turco stopped shots for the shutout. Turco also had an assist.
