Tropical storm Danny formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday,
the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory. The storm, which was
packing 45 mph winds as of Wednesday morning, is expected to strengthen into
the season’s second hurricane later this week.
Tropical storms reach hurricane status when their maximum
sustained winds hit 74 mph. Danny is expected to follow a northwesterly track
through Thursday, then turn north on Friday before veering to the northeast
over the weekend. The path is similar to that of last weekend’s Hurricane Bill,
the first hurricane of the 2009 season.
The Bahamas and Southeastern United States were cautioned
to monitor the storm, which could impact the East Coast by late Friday.
The National Hurricane Center will issue another advisory
at 5 p.m. EDT.
