President Hamid Karzai has increased his lead over main political rival Abdullah Abdullah in Afghanistan’s recent presidential election and now holds 45% of the ballots counted compared to 35% held by Abdullah, that after 17% of the ballots have been counted.
Karzai had held a narrow 2% lead after 10% of the votes were counted and with the gap now widening many expect the incumbent to land a second term in office. While supporters of Karzai celebrate the figures there are many opponents who have alleged wide-scale voter fraud and rigging and have already declared the election illegitimate.
According to the election commission of the 940,000 votes counted thus far Karzai had secured 422,000 of the votes while Abdullah has been credited with 330,000 votes. A candidate needs to secure a 50% majority to avoid a run-off.
