For the first time in nearly 50 years the New York Jets will have a rookie as their starting quarterback when the season opens as Mark Sanchez was handed the title on Wednesday by head coach Rex Ryan.
Ryan announced, “I feel that the best move for our franchise and our team is to go with Mark as our quarterback,” making Sanchez the first rookie to start the season since Dick Jamieson took the snaps in the Jets franchise opener in 1960.
While Sanchez hasn’t been flawless in the preseason he has always been marked as the franchise’s future and despite a 3-8 performance against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night Ryan saw enough to make the move.
Sanchez will now become the first rookie to make a start for the Jets since Matt Robinson who lined up under center when NY faced the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 27, 1977.
