Saddam Hussein will be hung within 30 days according to the ruling of Iraq’s highest appeals court.
Hussein had been found guilty and sentenced to die for the killings of 148 Shiites in 1982. The killings were carried out as a revenge for an assassination attempt on Hussein.
According to Iraqi law the recent court order must be ratified by President Jalal Talabani as well as the country’s two vice presidents. While the execution of Hussein requires the approval of these three men the High Tribunal is adamant that their decision will be carried out regardless.
Chief judge Aref Shahin stated “From tomorrow, any day could be the day of implementation.”
