The thirty-eighth President of the United States, Gerald Ford has died. His health had been in decline since battling pneumonia in January 2006 and undergoing two separate heart treatments, including an angioplasty in August.
Ford took office on August 9, 1974 after President Richard Nixon resigned after the Watergate scandal. Ford became the first Vice President to assume the presidency via the 25th Amendment and is the first unelected president in the nation’s history . He held office from 1974-1977.
As President, Ford granted Nixon a full pardon for his involvement in the Watergate scandal.
Ford won the Republican nomination for presidency in 1976 but lost the election to Jimmy Carter.
