Johnny Depp Going from Pirate to Queen; Could Portray Freddie Mercury in Biopic
Johnny Depp is reportedly in the running to portray Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Robert De Niro’s biopic surrounding the late lead singer’s life.
Queen guitarist, Brian May, confirmed that the project was in development but would not elaborate on any details. It is believed that De Niro’s company Tribeca Productions will produce the film.
While May wouldn’t disclose any concrete information about the film he did reveal on the website www.brianmay.com that Johnny Depp “would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now.” on the website www.brianmay.com
The Pirates of the Caribbean modeled his character Jack Sparrow on the quirkiness of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. His ability to imitate the persona of extravagant and elaborate personalities could play to his favor in landing the role of Mercury.
Regarded as one of the greatest showmen ever to take the stage, Mercury was the ultimate in flamboyance and talent.
Mercury died in 1991, one day after confirming that he was HIV positive.
