Avocent Demonstrates Support for WS-Management Specification

Avocent Corporation, in collaboration with AMD and Renesas Technology, has demonstrated support for the Distributed Management Task Force’s (DMTF) Web Services for Management (WS-Management) specification.

42U, the nation’s largest independent value-added reseller (VAR) of datacenter and server management solutions, announces that Avocent Corporation, in collaboration with AMD and Renesas Technology, has demonstrated support for the Distributed Management Task Force’s (DMTF) Web Services for Management (WS-Management) specification in its next-generation remote server Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) management module.

The beta WS-Management support was demonstrated last month at the Microsoft Tech-Ed Forum in Barcelona, Spain, and used Renesas hardware running on an AMD Optero processor-based server platform. This collaboration expands on existing partnerships for Avocent’s Agentless Management Modules, which are currently shipping in nearly 4 million servers.

The WS-Management specification promotes interoperability between PCs, servers, devices, and management applications by providing a universal language that all types of devices can use to share data. It allows IT managers to remotely access devices on their networks using existing web services. Along with the Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) Command Line Protocol (CLP) initiative, WS-Management is part of the DMTF’s goal for lowering the operational costs associated with managing large networks.

Avocent has two centralized management platforms—the Cyclades OnBoard Service Processor Manager and the MergePoint 5200 Management Gateway Appliance. The platforms allow administrators to manage devices with service processors such as IPMI, iLO, and DRAC. Both platforms integrate with the DSView software or can be managed independently.

42U provides turnkey datacenter solutions, including KVM over IP, intelligent power, environmental monitoring, rack cooling, and rackmount solutions. For the past four years, 42U has been recognized as Avocent’s Platinum Elite VAR.
