Rev. Al Sharpton drove through the night to bring the body of James Brown back to Harlem’s Apollo Theater one last time. Sharpton drove from Brown’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia to the legendary New York club so that fans would have an opportunity to say goodbye to the “Godfather of Soul” on Thursday.
Brown made his debut at the Apollo in 1956 and Sharpton maintained that the theater always held a deep meaning to the singer. Before leaving Georgia for New York, Sharpton said “We're determined to make sure he makes the Apollo, he never missed the Apollo.”
The body of James Brown will lie in repose at the Apollo Theater from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Brown died of congestive heart failure on Christmas Day, he was 73.
