Can Airborne Allergens be Deadly?

Asthma symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing tightness in the chest. In severe cases, asthma can be deadly.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), asthma is characterized by inflammation of the air passages resulting in the temporary narrowing of the airways that transport air from the nose and mouth to the lungs. Asthma symptoms can be caused by allergens or irritants that are inhaled into the lungs, resulting in inflamed, clogged and constricted airways. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing tightness in the chest. In severe cases, asthma can be deadly.

There is no know cure for asthma at this time, though asthma can be managed with proper prevention care and treatment.  Asthma has a genetic component. If only one parent has asthma, chances are 1 in 3 that each child will have asthma. If both parents have asthma, it is much more likely (7 in 10) that their children will have asthma.

More Americans than ever before say they are suffering from asthma. It is one of this country's most common and costly diseases.  The AAFA states that 60 million people in the United States, one out of every four, suffer from asthma and allergies.

The AAFA goes on to calculate that the cost to the United States for asthma, not including allergies, is $18 billion dollars a year. The statistics are staggering.  According to AAFA very day in America:

·        44,000 people have an asthma attack.

·        36,000 kids miss school due to asthma.

·        27,000 adults miss work due to asthma.

·        4,700 people visit the emergency room due to asthma.

·        1,200 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma.

          ·        9 people die from asthma.

In keeping with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) 1997 recommendations, it is desirable to identify and remove common allergens and modify the home or office to reduce the level of ubiquitous (common) allergens. According to the technical report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) there is substantial evidence that damp, moldy environments are unhealthy. Before one can remove allergens and/or pollutants effectively, it is essential to understand if they exist, what they are and in what quantity.

Many of the between 1 in 4 Americans suffers from allergies or asthma can blame mold and other foreign airborne allergens such as dust mite, bacteria, fiberglass fibers, chemicals, formaldehyde, pollen, insect biodetritus, cockroach, animal dander, etc... as a major culprits or triggers for the condition. The serious conditions caused by asthma include a tightening of the airways along with an increase in mucus resulting in difficulty in breathing and in extreme cases, death.
