FDA Declares Cloned Animals Safe to Eat, No Special Labels Required for Consumers

The Food and Drug Administration has deemed cloned animals safe to eat and therefore will not require special labeling differentiating it from traditional livestock.

Larisa Rudenko and John C. Matheson, both scientists for the FDA, declared in the January 1 issue of Theriogenology “Meat and milk from clones and their progeny is as safe to eat as corresponding products derived from animals produced using contemporary agricultural practices.”

While the food may be safe to consume there have been several groups who have expressed distrust and discomfort with the idea of cloning. Center for Food Safety legal director, Joseph Mendelson, stated “Consumers are going to be having a product that has potential safety issues and has a whole load of ethical issues tied to it, without any labeling.”

Cloned animals have yet to make it into the food chain. In 2001 the FDA came to a voluntary agreement with farmers and cloning companies to keep cloned animals from entering food supply. It would still be several months before the FDA actually approved cloned animals for consumption.
