Family and close friends laid Michael Clarke Duncan to rest Monday at Los Angeles’ Forest Lawn Cemetery after an emotional memorial service in which many of Duncan’s celebrity co-workers paid tribute. The memorial featured a video performance by Stevie Wonder and words from Jay Leno, Tom Hanks and Green Mile director Frank Darabont.
"Just to see such a pure heart and pure kindness, and to see it taken so early. There are no sadder words than what might have been,” said a tearful Leno.
Duncan’s fiancé, former Apprentice star Omarosa Manigault, was in attendance along with Vivica A. Fox, David Boreanaz and Holly Robinson Peete.
Duncan passed away September 3 at Cedars Sinai Hospital. The 54-year-old had been receiving treatment at the hospital ever since his July 13 heart attack. Manigault saved his life by performing CPR and Duncan spent the first three weeks of his hospitalization in intensive care.
The actor is perhaps best known for playing death row inmate John Coffey in the 1999 film The Green Mile. His performance earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Duncan’s other credits include Planet of the Apes, The Whole Nine Yards, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Kung Fu Panda.
In addition to Manigault, Duncan is survived by his mother and sister.
