At least 39 students were injured in rural Illinois after it collided with a truck early Monday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of East 25th and North 32nd Roads. A silver pickup truck was proceeding through the intersection when it was hit by the bus. The bus did not have a yield or stop sign. The impact of the crash caused the bus to turn over on its side.
Thirty-nine students were injured, although none of the injuries were critical, some were serious. As of Monday afternoon, 22 students were released from the hospital. However one student and the bus driver remained hospitalized Tuesday morning.
“It’s amazing there weren’t more injuries,” Milton Superintendent Dave Hermann said.
The bus was en route to Milton Pope elementary and middle school.
The driver of the truck Michael Shelton, 44, was cited for failure to stop.
Recently in Texas, 20 children were injured after their school bus collided with a semi. According to the NHTSA close to 19 children are killed every year in school bus accidents, with a large number of those accidents caused by other drivers and not the bus drivers.
