Age really is just a number – even when it comes to drug dealing. A 71-year-old grandmother pleaded guilty recently to her role in a large New York drug ring after being arrested in February 2012.
Doris Smith was one of 34 defendants in a drug ring bust in Harlem. The charges she faced included conspiracy, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal sale of a controlled substance, and she pleaded guilty to the two felony counts of conspiracy and criminal possession, according to court documents.
Smith was packaging and storing PCP, cocaine and heroin in a building in Harlem, the indictment claims. She also helped other members of a drug organization by buying rubber gloves to package the PCP and warning organization leaders when police were in the building.
The arrests were the result of a 15-month investigation led by the New York Police Department's Narcotics Borough Manhattan North and the District Attorney's Office, according to a news release. The investigation began after complaints about neighborhood drug activity. Smith will be sentenced in October.
