Kathy Bates is now a two-time cancer survivor. The actress, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003, reveals she recently beat breast cancer by undergoing a double mastectomy.
"Luckily, I don't have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception,” Bates, 64, tells People magazine.
"My doctors have assured me I'm going to be around for a long time," she adds. "I'm looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do."
Bates kept her battle with ovarian cancer a secret for years. She opened up about her fight in recent years, telling Anderson Cooper in March that she would speak out if she was diagnosed with cancer again.
"If I go through it again, I think I would be a lot more open about it. I admire people who have been open like Melissa Ethridge and women I see walking around facing it without wigs and all of that stuff. I think I would be more courageous next time,” she said.
Bates is set to appear at the Emmy Awards on September 23. She is nominated for outstanding actress in a drama for her role on Harry’s Law, and former outstanding guest actress for her appearance on Two and a Half Men.
