Factory Fire Kills 289 People In Karachi

Pakistani officials say firefighters are still trying to put out a deadly blaze that engulfed a garment factory overnight in Karachi. Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh told reporters that firefighters face difficulties in reaching certain parts of the building. Another official said the building is near collapse.

The death toll is currently at 289, and it is expected to rise. All of the dead were factory employees. Rescuers are also working to get into the basement of the structure where dozens of people are believed to be trapped. Police say at least 25 people were injured in the fire.

The factory is located in the Baldia Town area of Karachi. About 500 workers were inside the building when the fire started last night.
