General Electric Announced due to continued decline in demand for product order

General Electric Co.

General Electric announced this week it has cut 54 hourly positions at its Mebane plant due to continued decline in demand for product orders. The plant made the cuts, which included 34 layoffs and 20 employees who were offered early retirement packages, on Monday, said the plant’s Human Resources Manager

As the economic recession continues, and as customer orders continue to drop, we have no choice but to reduce our capacity because we manufacture custom electrical equipment to specific customer applications and orders. We have searched for alternatives, but in the end, our capacity must be addressed,” The Mebane plant cut 130 positions in the first two quarters of 2009. Even with those cuts, order volume is down so much that the company is still being forced to reduce its workforce.
