Walk-on kicker Steve Aponavicius connected on a 37-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Boston College Eagles (10-3) over the Navy Midshipmen (9-4) 25-24.
The fact that Boston College even had an opportunity to kick the game-winner was surprising enough. That’s because Navy had the game locked up with 1:43 remaining in the fourth quarter and BC was out of timeouts. Instead of just straight handoffs to run out the clock, Navy opted to get fancy and Reggie Campbell fumbled a pitch from quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada. Boston College recovered the fumble and took over at the Navy 40.
Navy, the nation’s leading rushing team, dominated the ground game. They managed to rack up 322 yards on 59 rushing attempts. Shun White carried the ball seven times for 116 yards and Zerbin Singleton rushed six times for 71 yards for the Midshipmen. As dominant as they were in the running game, their passing game was nonexistent. Attempting just eight passes, Navy had 81-yards in the air while two of their three touchdowns came from the passing game.
It was the opposite for the Eagles. Their ground game managed just 73-yards while their passing game accumulated 242 yards. BC quarterback Matt Ryan completed 20 of 29 passes and threw a touchdown. Despite the disparity in numbers, two of the Eagles three touchdowns came from the ground game.
The win marked the first time since 1984 that Boston College has won 10 games.
