NFL scores from Week 17
The Houston Texans (6-10) used a pair of third quarter touchdowns to beat the Cleveland Browns (4-12) 14-6 on Sunday. Chris Taylor rushed for 99-yards and a touchdown for Houston while the Texans defense forced three turnovers in the game. One of those turnovers, a fumble, was returned 50-yards by Anthony Maddox for a touchdown. Houston only managed 177 yards of total offense in the game while Cleveland managed to accumulate 306 total yards.
The Baltimore Ravens (13-3) used four Matt Stover field goals and a touchdown off an interception to beat the Buffalo Bills (7-9) 19-7. The Ravens forced three turnovers and allowed just 39-yards on the ground to the Bills. Steve McNair threw for 216 yards in the Ravens win. The Bills only touchdown came on a J.P. Losman 44-yard pass to Lee Evans in the third quarter.
Philip Rivers threw for 231-yards and two touchdowns as the San Diego Chargers (14-2) beat the Arizona Cardinals (5-11) 27-20. The win capped a perfect 8-0 record at home for the Chargers and assured them of the home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Chargers were trailing 7-0 before running off 27 unanswered points. Kurt Warner started at quarterback for the Cardinals and threw for 356 –yards and a touchdown
Mike Nugent kicked three field goals and the New York Jets (10-6) locked up a playoff birth after beating the Oakland Raiders (2-14) 23-3. Chad Pennington threw for 157 yards and a touchdown while Leon Washington rushed for 53 yards, 15 of which came on a fourth quarter touchdown. The Raiders ended their miserable season in the same fashion they started, turning the ball over three times.
Joe Nedney kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime to lift the San Francisco 49ers (7-9) past the Denver Broncos (9-7) 26-23. The loss not only dropped the Broncos to 9-7 but kept them out of the AFC playoffs. Frank Gore rushed for 153 yards for the 49ers and Walt Harris returned an interception 28-yards for a touchdown in the San Francisco win. Alex Smith passed for 194 yards and a touchdown as well.
With Jeff Garcia resting, A.J. Feeley led the Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) past the Atlanta Falcons (7-9) 24-17. Feeley threw for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns and Hank Baskett had 7 receptions for 177 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles. The Philadelphia defense looked primed for the playoffs after recording 5 sacks in the game.
Peyton Manning threw for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Indianapolis Colts (12-4) beat the Miami Dolphins (6-10) 27-22. The Colts accumulated 399 yards of total offense in the game. Miami was led by Ronnie Brown who rushed for 115-yards in the loss. Olindo Mare kicked 5 field goals for the Dolphins.
Shaun Alexander rushed for 92-yards and a touchdown while Matt Hasselbeck threw for 216 yards and a touchdown as the Seattle Seahawks (9-7) beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12) 23-7. Josh Brown kicked 3 field goals for Seattle. Tim Rattay threw for 185 yards and a touchdown in the Tampa loss.
The Carolina Panthers (8-8) recorded 5 sacks and forced 2 turnovers in their 31-21 win over the New Orleans Saints (10-6). The Saints rested most of their key players ina game that carried little weight for them. Jake Delhomme passed for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns and Deshaun Foster rushed for 79-yards and a touchdown in the Carolina win.
Steven Jackson led the St. Louis Rams (8-8) past the Minnesota Vikings (6-10) 41-21. Jackson ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns and added another touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Marc Bulger. The Rams quarterback threw for 248-yards in the game. The Rams defense held the Vikings to just 82-yards on the ground and forced two turnovers.
The Kansas City Chiefs (9-7) snuck their way into the AFC playoffs with their 35-30 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8). Larry Johnson rushed for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Chiefs and Eddie Kennison had 144-yards receiving and a touchdown. The Chiefs built a 35-17 lead in the third quarter and were able to hold on to get the victory. Losses by Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Denver pushed them into the playoffs.
Jon Kitna passed for 306 yards and 4 touchdowns to give the Detroit Lions (3-13) a 39-31 surprise victory over the Dallas Cowboys (9-7). Both Roy Williams and Mike Furrey had over 100-yards receiving for the Lions. Williams had 104-yards and two touchdowns while Furrey had 102-yards receiving and a touchdown. The Cowboys turned the ball over four times in the loss and enter the playoffs with two consecutive losses. Tony Romo threw for 321 yards in the loss and Terrell Owens had 117-yards receiving.
The New England Patriots (12-4) racked up 414 yards of total offense and beat the Tennessee Titans (8-8) 40-23. Tom Brady passed for 225-yards and a touchdown for New England and Vinny Testaverde threw a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Patriots. Reche Caldwell had 134 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Pats and Corey Dillon rushed for 67-yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tennessee turned the ball over three times in the game, all three were from Vince Young.
Santonio Holmes scored on a 67-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger in overtime to lift the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-8) past the Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) 23-17. The loss knocked the Bengals out of the playoff chance and made them losers of their last three games. Willie Parker rushed for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Steelers and Roethlisberger passed for 280-yards in the win. Pittsburgh’s offense managed to total 482-yards in the game.
