Incumbent Hamid Karzai has extended his lead in Afghanistan’s presidential election, further distancing himself from his closest rival Abdullah Abdullah.
According to the country’s election commission Karzai held just over 46% of the vote while Abduallah was carrying 31.4% after one-third of the votes had been counted.
Despite the commission’s assertion that the election was largely free of irregularities Abduallah has alleged “massive, state-crafted” fraud, saying “Today we were having meetings with representatives of five provinces. In eyewitness accounts of the elections, it's just dreadful. It's just alarming.”
He continued, “My point is whether the outcome of the elections will be decided based on massive fraud or the vote of the people.”
The final results of the election won’t be announced until Sept. 3, to avoid a run-off Karzai would need to secure at least 50% of the vote.
