Ethiopian Troops Reportedly Seize Control of Strategic Town in Somalia

Despite denials by the Ethiopian government witnesses have said the country’s troops have seized control of a strategic border town in Somalia, further instilling the belief the country’s soldiers have returned to fight Islamist militants in the neighboring land.

Ethiopian troops were the driving force in removing Islamists from power in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu but officially ended their campaign in January when all their troops pulled out. The Ethiopian government has insisted they would respect the peace deal that ended their involvement but reports have suggested they have once again taken up arms in Somalia.

Those reports have carried more weight following the seizure of the border town Belet Wayne, considered a strategic town for Islamist militants attempting to carry their battle into Ethiopia.
