Japan Readies for Sunday’s Elections, Opposition Democratic Party of Japan Expected to Gain Power

Japanese voters will head to the polling stations on Sunday in what many believe will be an historic vote that will shift the balance of power from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party  to the opposition Democratic Party of Japan.

That balance is expected to shift as Japan continues to fight its way through a difficult recession and staggering unemployment. Those issues have bolstered the DPJ’s position in the election and have many anticipating a rare change in power.

Addressing a large crowd of his supporters DPJ leader Yukio Hatoyama said, “At last, it is the election tomorrow, one that we will be able to tell the next generation changed Japanese history.” The DPJ has challenged the LDP’s focus on supporting corporations, insisting the role of government should concentrate on helping consumers and workers.

Facing mounting pressure from the people Japan’s Prime Minister Taro Aso, leader of the LDP, has urged citizens to be patient and allow time for recovery. At a rally in Tokyo Aso told supporters, “I beg you to give power to the LDP so we can complete the recovery.”
