Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been charged in three corruption cases tied to periods when he served as mayor of Jerusalem and a cabinet minister. He is the first former Israeli prime minister to ever face criminal charges.
Olmert was officially charged on Sunday as Attorney General Menahem Mazuz presented the charge sheet in Jerusalem district court. The former Kadima party leader has been charged with taking large sums of cash from a U.S. businessman while mayor, transferring travel expense money to a personal account, and arranging investment opportunities for a friend while he was an industry minister.
Olmert, who resigned as prime minister last year due to the allegations, has denied any wrongdoing and in a statement released by a spokesman it was noted, “Olmert is convinced that in the court he will be able to prove his innocence once and for all.”
