Dalai Lama Arrives in Taiwan to Comfort Victims of Typhoon Morakot

Despite strong opposition from China the Dalai Lama has arrived in Taiwan as part of a mission to comfort the people affected by last month’s devastating Typhoon Morakot.

The Tibetan spiritual leader was allowed to visit after Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou approved the request. While Ma had faced pressure from Beijing to block the visit he was already facing dwindling approval ratings from the Taiwanese people who accused the government of a slow response following Morakot.

Nearly 600 people died in landslides and flooding caused by Typhoon Morakot and more than a hundred people remain missing.

The Dalai Lama has said his visit to Taiwan is based purely on humanitarian and religious reasons and he has no plans to issue political statements. China has long opposed the spiritual leader, accusing him of being a separatist seeking independence for Tibet. Both Tibet and Taiwan are claimed as territories by the Chinese government.
