In one of the most anticipated elections is Japan’s history the opposition Democratic Party of Japan has sent the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to a crushing defeat, ending nearly 50 years of consecutive power.
According to exit polls the DPJ had claimed 300 seats in the 480-seat lower house, a feat that party leader Yukio Hatoyama has hailed as a revolution. That revolution appears to include the resignation of Prime Minister Taro Aso, leader of the LDP, who has taken responsibility for the defeat.
Japan has been facing record unemployment and a devastating recession leading up to the elections but Aso had appealed to the people to allow time for the recovery. That appeal was largely ignored in Sunday’s vote as polls suggested the people wanted a government more focused on consumers and workers rather than corporations, a major concern for the LDP.
Aso addressed the defeat at party headquarters saying, “These results are very severe. There has been a deep dissatisfaction with our party.”
With Aso on the way out it is almost certain Hatoyama will become the country’s next prime minister which would turn the focus of Japan’s government to reforming the current bureaucratic system and establishing a more balanced relationship with the United States.
