Shaun White apologized on his official Facebook page Tuesday for “poor behavior” that led to an arrest for public intoxication and vandalism over the weekend. The arrest occurred Sunday around 2 a.m. after the two-time Olympic gold medalist pulled a fire alarm at Lowes Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville. As he attempted to flee the scene in a cab, a bystander stopped him and told the taxi driver he was going to call police.
"When White overheard their conversation, he allegedly kicked the citizen and fled on foot. The citizen reported that he chased White until White turned and ran into him, apparently causing White to fall backwards and strike his head against a fence,” police said in a statement. "Responding officers Sunday reported that White appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol.”
White, 26, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was released Monday afternoon. Police say the man involved in the incident does not want to press charges against the snowboarder.
"I want to apologize for the unwise choices I made over the weekend and for any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel and their guests," White wrote on Facebook. "I was celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I'm truly sorry for my poor behavior."
White was in Nashville for the wedding of musician Patrick Carney.
