Cotton Bowl: #10 Auburn Capitalizes on Nebraska Mistakes for 17-14 Win

The Auburn Tigers (11-2) had almost no offense and turned the ball over twice yet managed to beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-5) 17-14 in the Cotton Bowl.

Auburn fell behind in the first quarter when Zac Taylor drove Nebraska 80-yards for a 7-0 advantage. Taylor hit Nate Swift on a 13-yard pass for the touchdown and early lead.

Auburn took advantage of a Taylor interception late in the first quarter to set up their first touchdown. Karibi Dede picked off the pass and ran it back 50-yards to the Nebraska 9-yard line. Brandon Cox then found Carl Stewart on second down for a 9-yard touchdown pass and the score was tied 7-7.

The second quarter proved to be advantageous for the Tigers. Josh Hebert forced a Nebraska fumble and Auburn recovered on the Cornhuskers 14-yard line. Stewart then found the end zone for the second time on a 1-yard run and Auburn was up 14-7.

Nebraska was able to tie the score after putting together a 73-yrad drive that was capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by Brandon Jackson.

The only scoring in the second half came off the leg of Auburn’s John Vaughn who kicked a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter. The field goal gave the Tigers a 17-14 lead and the kick would prove to be the game-winner.

Auburn was able to capitalize on the two turnovers committed by Nebraska. Offensively they managed just 178 total yards of offense but inherited great field position from the interception and fumble.
