Fresh Selections Spinach Recall Announced By Kroger

Kroger issued a recall Tuesday for 10-ounce bags of Fresh Selections spinach after tests determined the produce could be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can cause the illness listeriosis. The affected products were sold in Kroger, Jay C, Dillons, Baker's, Gerbes, Food4Less Fremont, Food4Less and FoodsCo. stores in 15 states. The bags have a “best by” date of September 16.

“Kroger is asking customers to carefully check their refrigerators for this recalled Fresh Selections product because it may contain Listeria monocytogenes. Any opened or unopened products included in this recall should not be consumed and should be returned by customers to their local Kroger store for a full refund or replacement,” says a statement on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

“Kroger has removed affected items from store shelves and initiated its customer recall notification system. Customers who may have purchased the affected products will receive register receipt messages and/or automated phone calls. Kroger is also placing signs in stores in produce departments,” the statement says.

So far, no illnesses have been linked to Fresh Selections Tender Spinach. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. The FDA says those with weakened immune systems, including pregnant women and the elderly, are most at risk for falling ill.
