British Soldier Gives Birth At Camp Bastion In Afghanistan

A British soldier who was unaware she was pregnant gave birth at a UK military camp in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday. Britain's Defense Ministry confirms the soldier, who has not been identified, delivered a premature baby boy at Camp Bastion in Helmand province after complaining of severe stomach pain. The ministry says the soldier and her son are “both in a stable condition in the hospital and are receiving the best possible care.”

A team of doctors from John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford is being sent to Camp Bastion to care for the soldier and baby. The pair will be flown back to the United Kingdom as soon as possible. Doctors believe the soldier was about 34 weeks pregnant when she gave birth.

The new mom arrived in Afghanistan in March. She is believed to be the first British soldier to ever give birth in combat. Britain does not allow pregnant troops to deploy and sends soldiers home if they fall pregnant while deployed.
