NBA Scores from Jan. 2; LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, and Dirk Nowitzki lead their teams to wins.
The Cleveland Cavaliers (18-12) scored 12 points in the second quarter, 11 points in the third, and then exploded for 38 points in the fourth to surprise the San Antonio Spurs (23-9) 82-78. LeBron James had 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists while Zydrunas Ilgauskas pulled down 13 rebounds in the Cavs win. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 18 points and 15 rebounds, Tony Parker scored 26 points in the loss.
Dwight Howard had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Jameer Nelson scored 29 points as the Orlando Magic (19-14) beat the Los Angeles Clippers (14-17) 91-86. The Magic trailed by 7 at the break but outscored the Clippers 26-15 in the third quarter. Corey Maggette scored 20 points in the Clippers loss.
Matt Barnes scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Ricky Davis added another 29 points as the Golden State Warriors (17-16) beat the NO/Oklahoma City Hornets (12-19) 97-89. Troy Murphy finished with 12 rebounds for the Warriors. Rasual Butler scored 30 points for the Hornets and Tyson Chandler grabbed 15 rebounds.
Leandro Barbosa hit a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to rally the Phoenix Suns (22-8) past the Chicago Bulls (19-13) 97-96. Amare Stoudemire finished with 24 points and 18 rebounds for the Suns and Steve Nash finished with 11 points and 13 assists. Barbosa scored 20 points in the win. Ben Gordon led the Bulls with 41 points. The Bulls led by 12 at the break and by 10 heading into the fourth quarter.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and had 15 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks (25-7) beat up the Seattle Supersonics (13-20) 112-88. The Mavericks grabbed 28 more rebounds than the Sonics. Jason Terry finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists and Josh Howard had 21 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Ray Allen had 27 points for the Sonics.
The Philadelphia 76ers (9-22) used a second half surge to beat the Denver Nuggets (16-13) 108-97. This was the first time the 76ers played against their former leader Allen Iverson. Andre Miller scored 17 points and had 10 assists and Joe Smith scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds against his former team. Iverson finished with 30 points and 9 assists and Marcus Camby grabbed 16 rebounds in the loss. The 76ers were up by 10 after the first period but the Nuggets were able to tie the score by halftime. Philadelphia used a 34-21 third quarter to separate themselves from the Nuggets.
Ron Artest scored 39 points and 8 rebounds as the Sacramento Kings (14-15) beat the NY Knicks (13-21) 112-100. Mike Bibby added 19 points and 9 assists in the Sacramento win. The Kings shot 56 percent from the floor on the night. Jamal Crawford led the Knicks with 28 points. The Knicks lost despite out rebounding the Kings 41-30.
