World Heart Day will be observed on Sunday, September 27. This global health observance was organized by the World Heart Federation and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) in an effort to increase public awareness and promote preventative measures to reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke. Since its inception in 1999, World Heart Day is now observed by more than 100 countries around the world.
There are nearly 17.5 million deaths annually worldwide due to cardiovascular diseases. In the United States, approximately 650,000 deaths (or 27% of all deaths in the United States) can be attributed to cardiovascular diseases. The three main contributing factors for heart disease are tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. The World Heart Federation organizes awareness events including health checks, organized physical activities, seminars, stage shows, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts and carnivals around the world.
“There is clear evidence that early detection is crucial in treating cardiovascular diseases,“ said Dr. John J. Connolly, President and CEO of Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. and former president of New York Medical College. “An informed consumer working in concert with top doctors and top hospitals is best prepared to face the challenges of making the appropriate lifestyle changes to manage this disease. That’s how America’s Top Doctors® now in its 8th edition, will best help people,” says Dr. Connolly.
America’s Top Doctors® names nearly 1000 physicians nationwide who specialize in cardiovascular disease. It is available at all major bookstores, online at http://www.castleconnolly.com/ or via the toll-free number 1.800.399.3627.
