After repeatedly declaring that he had no interest in becoming the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide and continuously pledging his allegiance to the Miami Dolphins Nick Saban has become, of all things, the head football coach at the University of Alabama.
Alabama had offered Saban the job in early December but the Dolphins head coach declined. Saban went on to say that he was dedicated to turning the Miami Dolphins into a winner and would remain until the job was complete. The two seasons Saban spent at Miami equaled a 15-17 mark and a familiar absence from the playoffs. He had another three years remaining on his contract, worth close to $4.5 million per year.
Saban was the head coach at LSU for five seasons and led the Tigers to the 2003 BCS National Championship. He compiled a 48-16 mark at LSU.
The new man at Alabama will be getting a guaranteed $32 million over eight years. He has a tall order ahead of him; the Crimson Tide finished the year at 6-7 and lost to Oklahoma State in the Independence Bowl. Alabama fired former head coach Mike Shula on November 27, 2006.
