Iran Blocks Google And Youtube To Protest Innocence Of Muslims

To protest a film mocking Islam’s Prophet Mohammed, Iran has blocked citizens from using Google and YouTube. According to the country’s semiofficial new agency Mehr, the government’s decision came after the public demanded the move. It is unclear if the restriction is temporary or permanent.

Protests against the film Innocence of Muslims first erupted on September 11 outside U.S. embassies in Cairo, Egypt and Benghazi, Libya. The Benghazi demonstrations resulted in the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Protests then spread across northern Africa and the Middle East.

Innocence of Muslims was written and produced by Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian immigrant living in the United States. Portions of the film were posted on YouTube. The film depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a child molester, killer and womanizer.
