Leonardo DiCaprio and Helen Mirren were each nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards on Thursday. The SAG announced their nominees for this year’s film awards DiCaprio and Millen were the only two that received multiple nominees for individual achievement.
DiCaprio was nominated for his lead role in the film “Blood Diamond” and received a nomination as best supporting actor in the Martin Scorsese directed movie “The Departed.”
Revealing the underbelly of the diamond trade in Africa, “Blood Diamond” moves to awaken the social consciousness that surrounds the violence associated with the harvesting of rare gems. DiCaprio’s role in the film clearly depicts the depths a mercenary will travel to obtain a valued stone.
In “The Departed” DiCaprio finds himself working as an undercover cop involved with a Boston crime gang. While DiCaprio received a nomination for his portrayal, fellow actors Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon were left of the list.
As for Mirren, this year proved she could handle multiple queens. She not only took the role of Queen Elizabeth I in “Elizabeth I” she also portrayed the current Queen in “The Queen.” Mirren received nominees for Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for television’s “Elizabeth I” and Actress for the feature length film “The Queen,” a role that many expect will earn her an Oscar.
Winners will be presented January 28 in a televised ceremony.
