Anand Jon Alexander Sentenced for 59 Years in Rape Cases

Celebrity fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander was sentenced to 59 years to life in prison Monday on charges of raping 7 young women. Alexander, 35, was arrested in March 2007 and charged with 59 counts of sexual assault. Prosecutors dropped more than half of them and jurors acquitted him of 4 counts and were deadlocked on 3 others.

Alexander was convicted last November of 16 charges of rape, sexual assault and other crimes for using the internet and the promise of a modeling career to lure girls as young as 14 to his Beverly Hills apartment for sex. Prosecutors say he used the girls to act out his sexual fantasies. He was given the maximum sentence for all but two counts. Judge David Wesley says the up-and-coming fashion designer, who was a guest on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model, showed no remorse for his actions and posed a danger to other young girls.

Before his sentencing, Alexander – who acted as his own attorney – asked for a new trial. He argued that he had not received a fair trial because a juror inappropriately contacted his sister, Sanjana Alexander, during the trial, prosecutors withheld evidence from his attorneys and his lawyers were ineffective in presenting his case.

In July, Judge Wesley ruled that the juror’s contact with Sanjana had not affected the jury’s verdict. The juror and Sanjana were both cited for contempt of court and are due to appear in court this month. On Monday, Wesley denied Alexander’s request for a new trial.

Deputy District Attorney Frances Young says Alexander’s sentence is appropriate because of the “aggravated nature of the crimes and the horrible torment on a number of victims.”

Alexander, who has designed clothes celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Mary J. Blige, faces similar charges in New York and Texas.
