It seems the New York Yankees are set to end their two-year relationship with left-handed hurler Randy Johnson. The Big Unit appears set to become an Arizona Diamondback for the second time in his career.
Reports have circulated that Johnson will be sent to Arizona for reliever Luis Vizcaino and a trio of minor leaguers, shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, and right-handed pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson.
It is believed that the Yankees would pick up $2 million of Johnson’s $16 million contract this season.
Arizona’s general manager Josh Byrnes has confirmed that the two teams have “an agreement in principle.” According to the commissioner’s office the sides must close the tentative deal by Sunday evening.
The 43-year-old Johnson has collected five Cy Young Awards and his return to Arizona is expected to jumpstart a team that finished 76-86 last season. From 1999-2004 Johnson compiled a 103-49 record with the Diamondbacks. In 2001 he led Arizona to a World Series title over the New York Yankees.
Since beginning his career with the Montreal Expos in 1988 Randy Johnson has compiled a career record of 280-147 with a 3.22 ERA.
