Svetlana Kuznetsova began he quest for a second Grand Slam singles title in 2009 with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Julia Goerges in round one of the 2009 U.S. Open. The Russian needed just 62 minutes to dispatch the German.
Kuznetsova was able to control the match by limiting her mistakes, committing just eight unforced errors while Goerges tallied 26 unforced errors. Kuznetsova also took advantage of her break point opportunities, capitalizing on five of her ten chances.
Kuznetsova has two Grand Slam singles title to her credit, a U.S. Open victory in 2004 and a French Open title earned earlier this year. The Russian reached the finals of the French Open in 2006 before falling to Justine Henin and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2005 and 2009 and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
