16 Elementary School Students Killed In China Landslide

A landslide in southwest China struck an elementary school and at least two farmhouses Thursday morning. State media reports at least 19 people were buried.

The landslide occurred around 8 a.m. in Zhenhe, a village in Yunnan province’s Yiliang County. Local authorities say the victims include eighteen students at Tiantou Primary School and one resident inside a farmhouse. At least one person sustained serious injuries.

An estimated 2,000 people searched through the rubble for survivors, but none were found. The bodies of sixteen students were recovered. Three people remain missing and are feared dead.

Local officials say the landslide was likely caused by rain over the last few days. The landslide comes a month after a series of earthquakes killed eighty people in the area.
