New American Idol judge Keith Urban thinks the recent on-set fight between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey was no big deal. In fact, Urban tells Extra that the fight is the result of Minaj and Carey’s passion for music.
"I love it, I gotta say. I love working with passionate people. I love artists. Everyone just sort of expressing themselves. It's a very alive and very invigorating work environment. A lot of passion,” the country singer told Extra at the New York Film Festival premiere of his wife Nicole Kidman’s new film The Paper Boy.
In TMZ’s footage of the incident it appears Minaj felt disrespected by something Carey said. Veteran judge Randy Jackson pleads with the pair to calm down while Urban avoids getting involved. “Think I'm playin? Think this sh*t is a f*cking joke? Think it’s a joke? Think it’s a joke? Think it’s a joke? Say one more disrespectful thing to me, if you say one more disrespectful thing to me -- off with your head!” Minaj snaps.
“I am not being disrespectful,” Carey insists.
“Don’t tell me I'm insecure, don’t tell me I'm inadequate ... you gonna get sent [inaudible] just fall back; don’t ... you don’t know [inaudible] I don’t feel inadequate. You’re the insecure one sittin' up there running down her resume every five minutes,” Minaj continues. “Every time you take a shot at me I'ma take it back, and if you gotta f*cking problem then handle it. I told them, I'm not f*cking putting up with your f*cking highness over there ... figure it the f*ck out. Figure it out.”
“Whyyyy, whhyyyyy... do I have a 3-year-old sitting around me?” Carey says.
TMZ reported Tuesday’s drama prompted producers to end the Charlotte, North Carolina auditions early. Neither Minaj nor Carey has commented.
