There are many myths about addiction that may actually do harm by preventing people from seeking treatment when they need it or keeping loved ones from knowing how and when to help those with substance abuse issues.
One of those dangerous addiction myths is the notion of hitting rock bottom. The idea is that if you wait long enough, everyone will eventually hit rock bottom and can then get help. But it’s a risky game to wait it out. Many with substance abuse problems, whether it’s drugs or alcohol, never get a chance to hit rock bottom. They overdose or die before they reach that low level. For many people, “rock bottom” is too late. Even if it isn’t, the longer someone remains in the throes of addiction, the more damage they do to their bodies, their relationships, their loved ones and their lives – and some of that may not be reversible.
The truth is, rock bottom is different for everyone. For some it may simply involve negative consequences related to career or family while others may experience a much more dramatic rock bottom that includes legal issues, arrest, becoming homeless or breaking the law to obtain drugs.
Whatever the consequences, they have little impact on a person’s ability to become clean or remain successful in the lifelong process of recovery. With that in mind, it’s always better to get help as early as possible rather than wait for proof that the problem is desperate and something you can’t handle without professional help.
