Daryl Hannah was arrested Thursday along with a Texas landowner after staging a protest of the Keystone XL pipeline. According to reports, Hannah and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild attempted to stop the construction of the pipeline on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm by standing on equipment. Both women were booked for criminal trespassing at Wood County Jail. The Kill Bill actress was also charged with resisting arrest.
A spokesman for TransCanada, the company behind the $7 billion project that will bring crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast, said the arrests are “unfortunate.” "It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property," said David Dodson.
After her release from jail, Hannah explained what happened to KLTV. "I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild's land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn't want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain. We just sort of stood in front of them and held our hands in a stop motion. I'm holding my wrist because there was this private security guard hired by TransCanada and he injured my wrist,” she said.
"The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they've gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets,” Hannah’s manager, Paul Bassis, later told AP.
Hannah has been arrested multiple times in the past for participating in various protests.
