Maria Sharapova had little trouble moving out of the first round at the 2009 U.S. Open, taking needing just over an hour to knock off Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday night.
Sharapova struggled with her first serve and committed 22 unforced errors in the match but the Russian collected 29 winners and converted on six of her ten break point opportunities while allowing Pironkova to break her serve just once.
Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles in her career with her first coming at Wimbledon in 2004. Her next title came at the U.S. Open in 2006 and in 2008 she won the Australian Open, leaving the French Open as the only Grand Slam event she hasn’t won. Her best finish at Roland Garros was a semifinals appearance in 2007.
