Rescuers furiously dug through snow looking for victims of one of the largest avalanches to strike Colorado in recent memory. Seven people were pulled from the disaster after more than 30 rescuers grabbed shovels and began searching through the effects of the major disaster.
The avalanche took place near Berthoud Pass on U.S. 40 and was described by crew members of the Colorado Department of Transportation as “the largest they have ever seen.”
At least two cars were buried from the cascading snow and crews are still looking for cars that may have gone off the road.
The disaster could have been much worse had it happened a few hours earlier than its 10 a.m. strike. The road is the main path for travelers heading to Winters Park Resort and on a typical weekend day the skier’s paradise draws over 10,000 people a day, many of whom are on the snow by 8:30 a.m.
It was estimated that the avalanche was 100 feet wide and as deep as 15 feet.
