Taken 2 took first place at the box office over the weekend, knocking the animated family comedy Hotel Transylvania back a place to number two. The action thriller starring Liam Neeson raked in $50 million - double the opening weekend earnings of the first film in 2009. Taken 2 also stars Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.
“This so exceeded our expectations going in. The come in at $50 million is really remarkable, and a testament to this character that Liam has created,” said 20th Century Fox domestic distribution vice president Chris Aronson.
Hotel Transylvania starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez took second place at the box office with $26.3 million. Pitch Perfect with Anna Kendrick landed in third place with $14.7 million. Looper and Frankenweenie rounded out the top five with $12.2 million and $11.5 million respectively.
