For the first time in 40 years Somalia’s President Abdullahi Yusuf was back in Mogadishu. Backed by his own soldiers and Ethiopian troops Yusuf made his way to the capital city of Somalia.
It has been just over a week since Islamic militants fled the city it held for six months. Ethiopian forces coupled with Somali soldiers drove the Islamists from power shortly before the New Year.
Yusuf had been elected at a Somali peace conference in Kenya in 2004. As a former warlord in the northern region of Puntland region Yusuf had kept his distance from Mogadishu where many consider him to be an outsider.
Peacekeeping forces were expected to arrive in Somalia in an attempt to restore order to the impoverished African nation. On Friday the United States pledged millions to assist in the mission and provide aid to the countless Somali’s who are living in abject poverty.
The proposed forces of 8,000 peacekeeping troops are expected to replace the Ethiopian troops in two weeks
