Sammi Kane Kraft, a talented athlete whose love of baseball helped land her the lead role in the 2005 Bad News Bears remake, died this week in a car accident on a Los Angeles freeway. Kraft was just 20-years-old.
According to authorities, Kraft was a passenger in an Audi driven by 21-year-old Molly Kate Adams on 10 Freeway early Tuesday. Adams was speeding when she rear-ended a large truck around 1:30 a.m. Her car was then hit by another vehicle. Kraft was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Adams, who sustained minor injuries, is suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the accident. She has been arrested for felony DUI. The accident is under investigation.
Bad News Bears is Kraft’s only acting credit. She played pitcher Amanda Whurlitzer. The character was played by Tatum O’Neal in the original 1976 film. "I could never fill Tatum O'Neal's shoes, but I tried to make the role my own. I added a bit of the New York in me. A little toughness, a little bit of smart-ass,” Kraft said in 2005.
